Deception Peak
Marichus Real

A five-star review on Deception Peak by Dianne Lynn Gardner, March 24, 2014 A gifted copy was given in exchange for an honest review.
Dianne Lynn Gardner took us to a magical world where we accompanied Ian in his adventures as he follows his fate. In that strange world, Ian is going to find something he had never thought to find there and that is friendship and the feeling of belonging. The story feels so real that it’s difficult to get out of the book when life calls you back from the Realm. I did enjoy reading it.

Where fantasy and technology combine February 23, 2014
The book does a great job of interfacing technology
with fantasy. It allows the reader to step easily from here to there
without too many details in the explanation. The young adult aspect is
perfect for young and old. Relax and enjoy, then grab the next book!

What A Great Beginning!
February 19, 2014
I received a copy of this book for the purposes of
review, and am not obligated to give anything but an honest review.
This book is a YA fantasy dealing with the issue of healing from grief and finding courage to go on.
The main characters are Ian and his father Alex, who step through a magic portal they somehow linked to with their computer and find themselves in another world where the wind talks to them in Ian's deceased mother's voice. There's a wicked dragon that has enslaved some of the people: the Meneks. But not all of the people are willing to be enslaved. When they become rebellious, they are cast out by the Meneks and become the Kampaerns. The Kampaerns are as committed to destroying or removing the dragon as the Meneks are to serving him.
I loved the action/reaction sequences when Ian's classmate, Abbi becomes aware of the odd goings on in Alex and Ian's home. Her reaction to the blue circle and flash of light is a classic!
I'm hoping that Abbi will talk them into taking her back into The Realm with them in one of the next books and sharing their adventures. That, or find a way to sneak in after them!

Intriguing teen sci fi-fantasy-time travel
October 5, 2013
'Deception Peak' is a tale of Ian Wilson's
adventures on the other side of a portal he and his father create.
Despite many doubts about the wisdom of visiting and then exploring the
land they find themselves in, Ian gradually understands how much more
growing up he has to do. Life among the Meneks and Kaempners with the
threat of destruction from 'the master' shakes him out of his teenage
shell onto the path of a courageous young adult. By the end of the
story, he has conquered a number of personal and physical threats only
to face the loss of an enemy who has become a friend. While the Songs he
hears in his dreams and while he lives with the Meneks are beautiful
and prophetic, little is explained about their source and creator.
Perhaps a future book in the series carries out this thread and also
shows us whether he and his dad continue to use the portal. Some close
editing would have been helpful in several places to repair spelling and
punctuation errors, but none were so serious as to slow the reading
pace. The fast-paced action is punctuated by lovely moments when
everyone can catch a breath before the next exciting scenes.
